The next time your word processor updates its custom spelling dictionary, which in my version of Microsoft Word is achieved by clicking “Add to dictionary” for any word while running the spell checker, the word processor will sort all the terms how it wants them and remove any duplicates. If you’ve added words to your copies of my custom dictionaries and you want to download my new versions, then just open either of my updated files, copy all of the text in it by clicking and dragging or pressing CTRL+A, and paste it to the bottom of your copy.

You can change the default dictionaries and set different files to be custom dictionaries for various languages in File | Options | Proofing. The reason is this: If you’re using one of my dictionaries as the default for US or UK English, then clicking “Add to dictionary” will add terms that you’ve come across but I haven’t, and if you replace your copies of my files with the new ones, then all of the terms you’ve added yourself will be lost. If you want to add words to your custom dictionaries that way, then I recommend creating your own custom US and UK dictionaries and setting them as the default ones and not modifying mine unless you notice an error. A note about adding words to your Microsoft Word custom dictionaries: When you click “Add to dictionary” while running the spell checker, Word adds that word to only the default dictionary of the current language.(The UK file suddenly has more because I finally used Excel to find their differences and eliminate them, but the UK file still has lots of hyphenated terms I haven’t done anything with. I have one file for American English spellings and another for British English spellings:Ĭustom_scientific_US.dic (685,101 entries)Ĭustom_scientific_UK.dic (687,841 entries).I’ve accumulated thousands of terms in my Microsoft Word custom dictionary over my career as a scientific editor, and I added literally hundreds of thousands more from the sources listed below. It is amazing how hard it is to find any list, much less a comprehensive one, of scientific terms to add to spelling dictionaries, such as those of Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, LibreOffice, etc.
